Laser Hair Removal
If shaving, tweezing, or waxing is becoming a hassle to remove unwanted hair, laser hair removal may be an option for you. Men and women often wish to have hair-free areas on their body. Dr. Mirabile and Dr. Hsu have cutting-edge medical laser technology to effectively treat these areas with minimal discomfort and maximum efficacy. Hair can be removed from any area of the body utilizing our Palomar laser. Within several treatments, most hair will be removed. Occasionally, after the hair removal process is complete, patients will require one annual treatment to avoid re-growth. Laser hair removal is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures in the United States. The procedure involves beaming highly concentrated light into hair follicles. The pigment in the follicles absorbs the light, which destroys the hair. Lasers are used to remove unwanted hair from the face, leg, arm, underarm, bikini line, and various other areas.
The Palomar Laser uses extreme precision, targeting dark and coarse hair while leaving the surrounding skin undamaged. The process of laser hair removal itself is quick. Smaller areas, such as the upper lip, can be treated in less than a minute, and large areas, such as the back or legs, can be completed in one hour.
Laser hair removal treatments are also very reliable; 90% of patients have long-term hair loss from just 3-5 sessions.
What to Expect During Laser Hair Removal
Before the laser treatment is performed, the hair in the targeted area will be trimmed so that it is just a small distance from surface of the skin. Once this is done, the laser settings can be adjusted to the specific color and thickness of your hair, as well as location and skin type. Some lasers or light sources require the use of eye protection for the treatment. In addition, a cold gel or a cooling device will be provided for safety. These cooling methods will protect the outer layer of the skin, and will also help the laser light to penetrate into the skin for a more effective procedure.
The technician will then test the settings of the laser on the skin by giving you a pulse of light and monitoring the area for a few minutes to check for any reactions before proceeding with treatment.
At the completion of the procedure, there are multiple ways we can ease any discomfort being felt. Ice packs, anti-inflammatory creams, or lotions will be given to soothe the treated skin. Patients can reschedule in the next 4-6 weeks after the initial treatment and will undergo treatments until the hair stops growing.
How to Prepare for Laser Hair Removal
Six weeks before undergoing laser hair removal, it is advised to limit plucking, waxing, and electrolysis. Because these hair removal methods remove the roots of the hair follicles, they should not be performed prior to treatment.
It is important for patients to avoid sun exposure 6 weeks before treatment and 6 weeks after. Sun exposure lessens the effects of the laser treatment and makes complications more likely.
