IPL Treatments for Sun-Damaged Skin: What to Expect

IPL Treatments for Sun-Damaged Skin: What to Expect

Years of enjoying the sun can leave lasting marks on your skin, from dark spots to redness. If you're looking for a non-invasive way to restore your clear complexion, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy might be the perfect solution. This advanced treatment targets the visible signs of sun damage without the need for invasive surgery.

At Best Impression Med Spa in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania, Dr. Robert J. Mirabile, MD, and Dr. Vivian Hsu, MD, help patients revitalize their skin. We'll customize every treatment plan to address your unique cosmetic goals and restore your skin's natural radiance.

What is IPL and how does it work?

IPL, also known as a photofacial, uses broad-spectrum light to target pigment and redness in the skin. Unlike lasers that use a single wavelength of light, IPL releases multiple wavelengths to treat a larger area of skin at once. The light penetrates down to the second layer of your skin without harming the top layer, gently heating and breaking down damaged cells so your body can naturally clear them away.

This process is highly effective for clearing up both dark spots and vascular issues. According to a study published by Gavin Publishers (2025), patients achieved an average clearance of more than 75% of their pigmented and vascular facial lesions three months after completing their therapy.

What can IPL treat?

IPL is incredibly versatile and addresses several common concerns caused by UV exposure. It's particularly helpful for reducing brown spots, freckles, age spots, and uneven skin tone that accumulate over years of sun exposure.

It also works wonders for the vascular manifestations of sun damage, such as broken capillaries and persistent redness. Research in the Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology (2024) shows that IPL can reduce facial redness by up to 80% and decrease visible broken capillaries by 51%.

What to expect during and after your session

During the procedure, we apply a cool gel to your skin and provide protective eyewear. You'll feel a warm, snapping sensation as the handpiece moves across the treatment area, which most patients tolerate very well. The session is quick, typically taking under thirty minutes depending on the size of the area.

There is a common myth that a single IPL session instantly erases all accumulated sun damage. In reality, a study from the National Institutes of Health (NIH, 2026) notes that an optimal reduction in pigmentation and textural abnormalities requires a structured protocol of six or more sessions at regular intervals to safely achieve cumulative facial rejuvenation.

After your session, your skin might look and feel slightly sunburned for a few days. Pigmented spots will darken and naturally flake off over the following week, revealing brighter, more even skin underneath.

You don't have to live with the lasting effects of sun damage. Our experienced team is here to guide you through every step of your skin rejuvenation journey. Contact our office in Blue Bell today to schedule your personalized consultation.
