Is It Too Late to Start Laser Hair Removal Before Summer?

Is It Too Late to Start Laser Hair Removal Before Summer?

Are you a man or woman bothered by excess hair in places you don’t want it? A thick head of hair is a sign of virility and energy in men and a symbol of beauty and sensuality in a woman, but hair where it’s not wanted can be an embarrassment. Think dark hair on the upper lip if you’re a woman or hair that looks like fur on your back if you’re a man.

Our expert laser aestheticians at Best Impression Med Spa in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania, under the direction of board-certified Dr. Robert Mirabile and Dr. Vivian Hsu can whisk away that unwanted hair, leaving your skin silky smooth. Here’s the skinny on laser hair removal.

Where on the body does laser hair removal work?

Our staff has selected the Vectus® laser system from Cynosure® for your hair removal needs because of its record of safety and efficiency. This system removes unwanted hair from just about any place on your body: face, back, chest, arms, underarms, bikini line, and legs.

How many appointments do you need for laser hair removal?

You’ll need anywhere from two to six appointments, depending on your hair and the areas where you would like it removed. After your first treatment, you’ll see between 10% and 25% less hair. Individual results vary depending on the color of your hair, the areas being treated, your skin color, and even your hair’s density.

Hair grows in stages; some are in a rest cycle while some are growing. That’s why you’ll need multiple appointments to remove all of your unwanted hair.

How far apart are laser hair removal sessions?

Depending on your hair and skin, you’ll need a number of sessions anywhere between four and eight weeks apart. Hair on the upper lip grows fast, so your appointments might be four weeks apart. Hair on the back grows more slowly, so your appointments would be near the high end of the range.

Is it too late to start laser hair removal before summer?

If you start now and have your first appointment in early May, you’ll be able to have at least two and maybe three appointments before summer officially begins in late June. Hair that’s left at this interim stage of treatment will be much less noticeable.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

Hair usually doesn’t grow back for anywhere from months to years. If hair does grow, it will be thinner and lighter. For practical purposes, you’re hair-free. Keep in the back of your mind that you might need maintenance treatment at some point.

What you should know if you’re considering laser hair removal

If you’re thinking of laser hair removal treatment in the near future, you’ll need to refrain from getting a suntan, either outdoors or from a tanning bed. You won’t be able to spray a tan from a bottle, either. Use sunscreen every time you go out to protect your skin.

Getting a tan too soon before laser hair removal is likely to cause unwanted side effects. In addition, a tan means less contrast between your skin color and hair color, making the laser less effective when it tries to target the hair follicles. In summary, try not to tan at all before laser hair removal, but if you do tan, wait at least a month before having the procedure.
