Laser Resurfacing vs. IPL: When to Use Which

Laser Resurfacing vs. IPL: When to Use Which

Laser resurfacing and intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy, also called a photofacial, are both light-based, in-office treatments that can eliminate a variety of skin flaws. However, they work in very different ways and offer different benefits.

At Best Impression Med Spa in Blue Bell, PA, we offer both treatments. Our medical aesthetic experts, Robert Mirabile, MD, and Vivian Hsu, MD, help you decide which is right for your skin type and goals.

How laser resurfacing and IPL differ

Laser treatments deliver a single, intense wavelength of light in a focused, localized beam, while IPL delivers broad-spectrum visible light at multiple wavelengths.

IPL can address multiple skin problems simultaneously, such as brown spots and red areas, while lasers focus on a specific wavelength attack only one problem more intensely.

Because IPL light is also more scattered, it can treat your skin without damaging the top layer, resulting in quicker healing.

However, because laser treatments are more intense, they deliver more noticeable results.

When to choose IPL

IPL is often best for surface-level issues. It is a great choice if you are dealing with:

This broadband light treatment can be performed on the face, hands, neck, chest, and legs. Usually, it takes 3-6 treatments, scheduled at 2-4 week intervals for optimal results. Recovery after IPL is minimal and may include mild skin redness and a “sunburn” sensation that subsides within a few hours.

When to choose a laser

Lasers are the heavy hitters for specific problems. They are usually better for:

Lasers penetrate deeper into the skin than IPL can, making them the preferred choice for skin resurfacing.

We use the best-in-class CO2RE laser to improve skin tone, color, and texture. It can eliminate fine wrinkles and improve the appearance of deep wrinkles.

At Best Impression Med Spa, we customize each CO₂ laser treatment to suit your skin type, concerns, and goals, ensuring safe, effective, and natural-looking results. This treatment can be performed under local anesthesia.

Expect 7-10 days for full recovery. The skin will start to look noticeably improved in that time. A one-time treatment is usually sufficient to achieve the goals patients seek.
