5 Skin Benefits of a Chemical Peel

5 Skin Benefits of a Chemical Peel

Your skin is the largest organ in your body, and it’s exposed to all sorts of environmental hazards that your other organs are not. You don’t need to worry about protecting your lungs from the sun, and your heart isn’t subject to sagging thanks to gravity!

At Best Impression Medical Spa and Laser Center, our experts, Dr. Robert Mirabile and Dr. Vivian Hsu, want you to look and feel your best. In fact, our entire staff is dedicated to exactly that goal. We know that great skin is one of the keys to optimizing your appearance, and a chemical peel is one of the best tools for keeping your skin looking fantastic.

In this post, we describe five benefits of a chemical peel, and answer some common questions our clients ask regarding peels.

Chemical peel, defined

Many of our clients wonder what, exactly, a chemical peel is. The simple answer is it’s a cosmetic treatment that uses a chemical solution to help revitalize the skin on your face. The chemicals make microscopic wounds that trigger your body’s natural healing response.

A chemical peel spurs the production of the protein collagen, which generates new skin cells. Those new cells even the tone of your skin and help improve its texture.

Along with increasing collagen production, a chemical peel removes the thinnest top layer of your skin, where all the dead skin cells and other debris collect in your pores. Removing that dull, outer layer reveals the fresh, healthy skin beneath.

Benefit 1: Chemical peels tailored for you

There are many different types of chemical peels, and they vary by ingredients and strength. A light, or superficial peel is the gentlest; a medium peel is a bit deeper and addresses issues such as dark age spots, or deeper wrinkles, while a deep peel penetrates into the mid-to-lower-levels of your skin and offers dramatic results.

A light peel requires very little recovery time; a medium peel may take up to five days to recover; a deep peel requires bandaging and up to two weeks recovery time.

Along with the different strengths of peels, there are also different types. For example, if you have sensitive skin, a glycolic peel may be right for you. It can help exfoliate, and you may repeat it regularly four to six times to get optimal results. Your provider can recommend the best strength and type of peel to get your desired results.

Benefit 2: Smooth away wrinkles

One of the main reasons people request a chemical peel is to address fine lines and wrinkles. Simply by removing that rough top layer of skin and spurring your body to produce extra collagen, a chemical peel can lessen the appearance of wrinkles!

Benefit 3: It will not take all-day

A chemical peel typically takes from 30-60 minutes. Depending on the strength of your peel, you may be able to return to your normal activities. There’s no hospital stay required, even for a deep peel so you can go home immediately.

You may notice some redness immediately, and within about three days, you’ll see some flaking. All that should resolve in a short time, revealing your gorgeous, fresh skin.

Benefit 4: Correct sun damage

Even the most careful sunscreen users are likely to notice sun damage eventually. Dark spots, freckles, and other imperfections result from exposure to harmful UV rays. A chemical peel can help even your skin complexion and remove the evidence of sun damage.

Benefit 5: You will look refreshed

Over time, your skin starts to look tired. Maybe you’ve noticed it’s duller than it used to be. Maybe you look like you’re not sleeping enough — even if you are.

A chemical peel can help you look refreshed. It eliminates dry, flaky skin, which helps you look brighter and healthier.
