Debunking 7 Common Myths About Breast Augmentation

Debunking 7 Common Myths About Breast Augmentation

Despite the ongoing popularity of breast augmentation, many myths continue to exist regarding the procedure and what you can expect after surgery.

Best Impression Med Spa is a full-service plastic surgery and aesthetic practice that’s earned a reputation for delivering the highest quality results available to men and women in and around Blue Bell, Pennsylvania.

We’re also committed to providing the facts you need to make an informed decision about your care.

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Vivian Hsu refutes a few of the more common misunderstandings surrounding breast augmentation.

Myth 1: My breasts will look and feel unnatural after augmentation

Thanks to advances in medical technology and technique, the results of breast augmentation are very natural in appearance and texture.

At Best Impression, your augmentation is specifically tailored to fit your individual measurements and profile. We’re careful to position the breast implants in a way that provides the most realistic results. Many modern implants are developed from materials that feel very much like natural breast tissue.

The shape of your implant can also add to its natural appearance. Round implants are fuller at the top of the breast. Teardrop implants more closely mimic a natural breast shape, which is fuller at the bottom.

Myth 2: I will lose sensation in my breasts following augmentation

Some of our patients experience a temporary loss of sensation in the nipples following breast implant surgery. But we expect normal sensation to return once your incision sites have healed.

A complete or permanent loss of sensation is quite rare, and we thoroughly discuss what you can expect following surgery before scheduling the procedure.

Myth 3: Breast implants need to be replaced regularly

Breast implants are not considered permanent, but today's implants are designed to last a decade and may remain in place for 20 years or longer. We explain the signs and symptoms of implant issues to monitor and may recommend periodic follow-up.

Myth 4: I can’t have mammograms after augmentation

Breast implants do not prevent you from obtaining an accurate mammogram. Let the technician performing the mammogram know you have had augmentation since you may need additional X-rays to capture a complete view of the breast tissue.

Otherwise, continue with routine mammograms and other breast cancer screenings as directed.

Myth 5: Implants are not safe

All breast implants used in the United States are categorized as medical devices. As such, they are manufactured and tested for safety in accordance with guidelines provided by the Food and Drug Administration.

Myth 6: Breast augmentation takes the place of a breast lift

A breast augmentation adds volume to your breasts but cannot take the place of a breast lift, which counteracts sagging or drooping caused by aging, pregnancy, or significant weight loss. Some of our patients elect to have a breast lift and augmentation procedure at the same time.

Myth 7: I can expect significant scarring from breast augmentation

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure, and some scarring is inevitable, but we have extensive expertise in breast augmentation. We create incision lines that trace the natural curve of your breasts or areolas, which hides them from view.

Typically, though, you can expect the scars to fade significantly over time.
