The Secret to a Natural-Looking Rhinoplasty (aka Nose Job)

The Secret to a Natural-Looking Rhinoplasty (aka Nose Job)

If you don’t love the shape of your nose, you might have considered a rhinoplasty, more commonly known as a “nose job.”

While this procedure gives you a way to transform your nose — and consequently your entire face — it’s also a fairly complicated surgery. Your nose may look simple, but its structure is complex.

Not only is it shaped by a variety of precise planes and curves, but it’s also composed of different tissues that are easily scarred or damaged.

Keep in mind, a bad nose job will be something you and others won’t be able to look past. That’s why here at Best Impression Med Spa in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania, Robert Mirabile, MD, Vivian M. Hsu, MD, and our team take special care with each rhinoplasty patient.

We apply our specialized expertise to help you get your ideal nose shape and natural-looking results that you’ll love.

We also want to empower you to make strides toward your perfect new nose, so we’ve gathered up some tips you can employ to help.

Know what you want

Even though you may think you need to drastically change the shape of your nose, talk with a rhinoplasty expert like Dr. Hsu or Dr. Mirabile first. In many cases, conservative rhinoplasty procedures can deliver remarkable changes. The main thing to look for is a rhinoplasty that will bring your nose into balance with your face.

You should also know that your unique anatomy may restrict your reshaping options. Your nose has important functions to perform, and aesthetic changes can’t interfere with these. Consulting with Dr. Mirabile or Dr. Hsu establishes what’s right for your face and your physiology.

In short, to ensure you get ideal results from your nose job, talk with your rhinoplasty surgeon beforehand to make sure you’re on the same page about what’s feasible and what will best align with your cosmetic goals.

Prepare for the process

While choosing the best plastic surgeon is the first step toward ensuring an excellent outcome for your rhinoplasty, your responsibilities don’t end there. Dr. Hsu, Dr. Mirabile, and our staff give you instructions on how to prepare for your surgery and what to do during your recovery period.

It’s important that you follow the instructions precisely. If you’re not sure or don’t remember what you’re supposed to do, feel free to call us for clarification.

Pre-surgery preparation

In the two weeks leading up to your rhinoplasty, you may need to stop using or modify your intake of certain medications and supplements. One example is blood thinners, including aspirin or ibuprofen.

If you smoke, you should discontinue using any tobacco product, including vaping, in the months prior to your surgery. This will help you get the best results possible because nicotine can adversely affect blood flow and your body’s response to the surgery.

Also, start your post-operative preparations now. Get any post-op prescriptions filled so they’re ready as soon as you need them, and arrange for a week or two off work so you have adequate recovery time.

You should also find someone to drive you home after your procedure because you’ll be drowsy from anesthesia. You’ll also need assistance with your daily responsibilities, such as household tasks, as you recover.

Finally, get your bed and other resting places ready so you can recline with your head elevated to aid drainage of the affected areas. You don’t need to purchase anything special for this. You can just prop yourself up on pillows.

Post-operative steps

Dr. Mirabile or Dr. Hsu may need to put silicone splints in your nose after your procedure. These splints help guide your nasal bone and cartilage as they heal. Generally, they stay in place for about a week.

It’s also to keep your incisions dry. Opt for baths instead of showers.

If you wear glasses, during the early stages of recovery, tape them to your forehead so they don’t rest on your nose.

Avoid strenuous activities for at least two weeks — or until our team gives you permission to go back to normal activities.

Following these postoperative directions and any other instructions from our team will help you to get the best results possible from your rhinoplasty.
