Brown Lift Q & A

Are you beginning to notice that your brow has become lower, causing more forehead wrinkles and an angry or tired facial expression? Is your vision partially impaired by your brow?

Do you seem to have excess skin at your upper eyelids?

If these things are true, you may be a candidate for a brow lift.

The brow lift procedure is typically performed on patients between the ages of 40-65 to rejuvenate the forehead and area around the eyes and reduce the signs of aging.

The brow lift procedure may be right for you if you feel that your expression lines and other age-related wrinkles in the region of your brow are excessive or unsightly.

A brow lift can:

  • Remove or reduce horizontal lines or wrinkles on the forehead, or the vertical ‘frown lines’ located on the upper bridge of the nose, between the eyes
  • Lift a sinking brow that is drooping over the upper eyelid
  • Lift the eyebrows back to a position on the brow line that opens the eyelids and makes the eyes seem more alert

Procedures that are typically performed in conjunction with brow lift surgery:

  • Eyelid lift or rejuvenation, to restore aged eyes
  • A complete facelift to further reverse the effects of age and sun damage

Types of brow lifts that are available:

Coronal brow lift: This procedure involves making an incision on the hairline from ear to ear. The forehead is then lifted to its new position. The extra skin is removed, and the scalp and the lifted forehead are sewn together. Some muscles will be purposely weakened so there will be fewer horizontal forehead lines. Because nerves are involved in the area surrounding the incision, the patient may experience itching and numbness after the surgery.

Hairline brow lift: This technique is used for someone with a vertically large forehead. Dr. Mirabile and Dr. Hsu will place an incision at the hairline. The incision is performed in that area so that the hairline is not pulled back, but pulled forward. This allows the forehead to become more proportional in its vertical dimension. This procedure helps to erase horizontal creases in the forehead and raises the brow. A scar may be visible on the hairline, but usually an incision in this area hides very well.

Lateral brow lift: Incisions will be made within the hairline above each lateral brow. Removing skin and tightening the muscles in the area results in lateral brow elevation. Healed scars from this surgery usually hide very well.

To prepare for your brow lift: Patients are advised to stop smoking for at least 3 weeks before and 3 weeks after surgery. Patients should avoid medications such as aspirin, which act as blood thinners, as these may cause increased bleeding.

A brow lift takes about one to three hours, and the results are long-lasting.

What to Expect After the Surgery

For about 7-10 days after surgery, patients will have swelling and bruising of the forehead, cheek area, and around the eyes. Patients should keep their head elevated and apply cold compresses to reduce swelling and bruising. The bandages placed after surgery should be removed in 2 days. Sutures are removed 10-14 days after surgery. You may resume light exercise at 2-3 weeks and full strenuous activity at 6 weeks. Results may vary.

Patients should have someone available to take them home and to stay with them the night after surgery.
