Microneedling Q & A

What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that uses a series of tiny needle punctures to rejuvenate your skin. These small wounds (or micro-injuries) activate your body’s natural healing properties and stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, improving the smoothness and structure of your skin.

Microneedling is most commonly used to treat wrinkled and sun-damaged skin, but it can also improve acne scars and other skin abnormalities. Microneedling is primarily done on your face, but the team at Best Impression Med Spa also uses it to smooth out your thighs or get rid of stretch marks on your stomach.

How does microneedling work?

Before the microneedling procedure begins, your Best Impression Med Spa provider applies a topical anesthetic to the treatment area. Once the anesthetic has taken effect, your technician uses either a fine-needle roller or a pen-like device to create tiny holes in the top layer of your skin.

These micro-injuries promote healing and collagen production, which leads to smoother, tighter skin.

The length of a microneedling session depends on the size of the treatment area, but usually lasts between 15 and 20 minutes. You should wait at least six weeks between treatments so that new, natural collagen can form.

What are the side effects of microneedling?

It’s not uncommon for pinpoint bleeding to occur. You may also experience minor pain once the anesthesia wears off, and your skin may be red for a brief period.

Temporary discoloration occurs for some patients, and it’s most noticeable for people with darker skin.

Even though the needle holes are small, they are open wounds, so it’s important to keep your skin clean and avoid irritating lotions, swimming pools, and gyms, so you don’t run the risk of infection.
